Auron Blackfyre was bold and ambitious from birth. Not only so, but he was always seeking adventure upon adventure. Born into poverty in the small, coastal town of Terre Des Mythes, Auron waited impatiently for the day he would be old enough to join the local militia and from there the city-state's army, where he knew he would become a man. His father was a hopeless alcoholic who came home rarely, and his mother was killed during a raid when he was only seven. Not having spent enough time with his father to care for the man much, Auron willingly accepted care from his mentor, Caleb Ferus, who---the blacksmith of Terre---tutored young Auron in the art of swordsmanship and chivalry. Auron shadowed the knights that passed through from Esteron and other parts of the horizon, mimicking their movements, actions, and chivalrous tounges with fascinated interest. Supplementing his interest, Caleb also taught him the knowledge he would need to succeed in life...simple lessons in mathematics, philosophy, and speech. At age ten, Auron ran away, impatience having gotten the better of him, where he spent nearly six years wandering by himself and toning his skills.
It was during one of his ramblings that young Auron came upon a mysterious floating sea chest filled with treasure beyond belief. Upon breaking the lock, the spell broke and the chest fell to the sand with a thud. He never decided to investigate why the chest had been there, why there had been spell over it causing it to float, or where it had come from...and because he did not investigate, the reason why remains a mystery to this day. Nothing remains of the wealth or even the chest (which was made of gold), as Auron sold the entire fortune to purchase 1200 acres of uninhabited land along the coastline. Upon a great hill he built the magnificent Castle of Blackfyre, an incredible garrison that included a tavern, keep, barracks, library, town common, and hundreds of patron dwellings aside from the castle itself. Despising the tyranny that governed Terre Des Mythes, Auron gathered together a body of townsmen and named them Senators---men who would have the opportunity to decide to affairs of Blackfyre, elect a Lord, and speak for the people of Blackfyre. Other positions and branches of the government were discussed and positions named. In addition, knights gathered at Blackfyre, seeking work and companionship. Thus a mighty army surfaced, along with a squadron of ten knights. Auron Blackfyre was named Lord unanimously, and the Republic of Blackfyre was well on its way to greatness.
Many years later, the economy was booming. The army was immense, and fought bravely against the barbarian hordes who continually attacked from all directions and worked to expand the borders of the kingdom. There was little disagreement among the Senators, who were much to eager to please the people and continue to run the Republic in a way that satisfied them. Auron Blackfyre married the lady Vera and had two sons: Toric and Thomas. Though young Thomas died an early age serving the army in the east, Toric was raised in the image of his father, although he was a much quieter man and far less aggressive. At fifty years old, Auron Blackfyre had created a family, an empire, and amassed great wealth for himself and the people of Blackfyre. Trouble sparked only when rebels in Terre Des Mythes overthrew the Blackfyrian consulate and attempted to govern themselves. A party of knights entered Terre and convinced the rebels to back down, though tensions had begun to mount. After some time, Terre rejected Blackfyrian demands for tribute and threatened to fight the Republic. Auron and his heir Toric immediately garrisoned the city and held it under seige until Terre surrendered. Blackfyrian soldiers entered Terre Des Mythes and re-instated the consulate, but became much more flexible in regards to conquering neighboring peoples. Terre Des Mythes was allowed to govern its own affairs---under Blackfyrian supervision---but would remain part of the empire. Both peoples celebrated the end of a long period of turmoil and rejoiced in the peace that followed. This contributed to a great, sudden boost in the moral of Blackfyrians all over. The Castle of Blackfyre entered a great golden age.
It was then that Auron Blackfyre came across a small boy who would change his life forever.
