Overview:
The Forbidden Lords, sometimes known as Distant Gods, are not in fact deities or divine creatures. They wield power often comparable to gods and often weave the illusion amongst mortals that they are the true saviour deities of this world. They are mighty creatures that inhabit The Distant Realms, a senseless world of corruption and unspeakable madness where vast swarms of malformed creatures plot and scheme up ways to enter our world. With the power of creation at their disposal, The Forbidden Lords are a force to be reckoned with. However, this power comes at a price. The Forbidden Lords require either raw materials in physical form or in the form madness, reaped nightmares and souls to invoke their foul creations. This may be the reason for the constant warring between each other and the inexplicable desire to consume and harvest worlds that all Forbidden Lords share.
Religion:
There are far too many Forbidden Lords to list, all at different levels of power and standing in their dreaded Realm. A constant war rages between this multitude of godlike nightmare entities, and they value the ability to influence worlds in the form of cults and manifestations of their creations.
No one Forbidden Lord looks the same; they are all unique in their own horrific way. Generally they can change form at a whim, but prefer to spend most of their time as some sort of city-dwarfing, gargantuan mass of tentacles, barbs eyes, beaks, maws and so forth. There are exceptions to this rule where Forbidden Lords spend more time in their less chaotic, even human forms, but they are rare.
Mortal worshippers are valued amongst the Forbidden Lords, although will inevitably be used to fuel their ability to create and warp. They often bestow psychic abilities upon loyal servants and give them access to a variety of unnatural magics. These differ from Lord to Lord, one may focus on desolation while another on subtle deception, and these magics reflect this. In general they are corrupting, mutating abilities that inspire terror in the most hardened of warriors. Often powerful mortals who worship a (or all) Forbidden Lord(s) are granted the ability to summon their unholy creations, and sometimes the more powerful creatures are given as pets or servants. In general these include, much like The Lords themselves, gibbering masses of spiny tentacles and amoeba-like bodies and toothy mouths. Despite not sounding powerful, often they are terrifyingly difficult to kill.
Conjuring a Forbidden Lord is all but impossible. It has been tried and has failed, mostly because of the difficulty of the task but often because of stoic heroes. Forbidden Lords are completely alien to this world, they require a huge tear in the fabric of reality to move from one realm to another. Their creations can slip through the cracks and loopholes, but The Lords themselves are too unnatural for the universe to allow them to exist in this world. Only when the walls between realities is at it’s weakest and with a veritable army of worshippers, souls, mages and some sort of powerful artefact can a Forbidden Lord be summoned, and even then requires a continuous meal of souls to sustain itself in this dimension. Once more, there are barely any crazy enough to try. No seals would bind a Forbidden Lord; it would be free to harvest the world.
