Appearance: Head to hips retains human characteristics, while hips and lower half retain fish-like or shark-like characteristics.
Mermaids and mermen can either be born as a direct relation between a rare species of fish or shark and a humanoid, or between themselves. Being that the lower half of these creatures's bodies are fish/shark, the female of the species (excluding certain species, i.e. seahorse) can lay any number of eggs, rather than giving birth. The mermaid/mermen gene is always dominant, and if a mermaid/mermen were to attempt to procreate with another human, the characteristics of the child would retain fish/shark qualities, though not necessarily fishtails.
Mermaids and mermen are able to breathe both above and below water, being that they retain both of the characteristics of humans and fish/sharks. Only few mermaids and mermen can speak their native underwater tongue taught to some by the fish. English remains the common language. Not too much else is known about mermaids and mermen, for they rarely draw close enough to humans for further exploration.
