Introduction: The Arcanians
The long, illustrious history of the eternal myth that is Tokei Arcanos can be traced to an extinct civilization, one dating back to biblical times. This civilization was known as the Arcanians. For many centuries they made their residence in what is now Junon Harbor. With repeated contacts with the Europeans during the Middle Ages, the Arcanians established themselves as a powerful kingdom and were respected as the longest-lasting of kingdoms. The Arcanians, although primarily fishers, shepherds, and farmers, soon developed a new class: warriors. Warriors were needed in case of unrest or attacks on the kingdom by foreigners wishing to topple them. The warrior class soon came to outshine the others: the first true king had only become king by defeating all other people in power. And thus begins Tokei’s tale.
I. Keeper of the Light
Around the year 1000, a young heir to the throne was born. The boy was named Tokei, which means “keeper of the light”. Throughout his childhood and early teens, Tokei found it ironic that his name suited him perfectly. In his handling of subjects, he could not bring himself to treat them badly, only treating them with kind respect, never revealing any bad or evil sides to himself. In his attitude towards court affairs as he was coming of age, he nearly always opted for the perfect agreement between the two parties. Tutors and mentors found him possessing the wisdom of an elder, enabling him to successfully help others with their problems. Some of the elders he cared for even mentioned that he sort of shined as he worked, always bringing smiles into he room. As Tokei grew older, he developed interests in warfare, much like any young boy. He quickly picked up the sword, no easy feat because he was left-handed. For many years, he trained himself with his sword until he was regarded as one of the best of the Arcanians. He’d even been given his own army at the age of 16, and just in time, too. Invaders had taken to pillaging some of the smaller, more remote towns. Under Tokei’s direction, his battalion finally wiped out the invaders in an epic battle. Shortly after the battle ended, Tokei noticed a portal of sorts opening just beyond the battlefield. Intrigued, he ran to it. It was a deep blackish purple, swirling round and round as it ripped a hole in the sky. Apparently, one of his opponents, a mage, had been killed while in the middle of summarizing some otherworldly monster. Sensing his presence, the hole suddenly began twisting faster than before, visibly sucking in things around him. Because he was tired from the fight, his resolve was not as strong as it should have been. The portal’s suction overcame him and he was pulled in, unconscious.
II. Limbo
Tokei woke up to find himself staring up into pure black. Slowly coming to his senses, he realized that he was floating in midair. His eyes adjusted to the light just as his body adjusted to the weightlessness, adding dark shades of blues, reds, greens, oranges, and purples to the dark scenery. Tokei suddenly realized where he was, a place that existed only in legends: Limbo, the space between dimensions and times where only the unholiest souls were sent after death. Days, weeks, months passed. After a time he lost track of how long he’d been there. Portals to Limbo only open in two ways: randomly, and by the power of a skilled mage. The stronger the portal, the more power it has to suck in unsuspecting objects. This process provided periodic information for him. Since he was in the space between living and dead, he had no need for food, drink, or even air, which explains his long survival. Many times, he faced off against Limbo’s Faithful, a multi-headed, gruesome monster whose job was to police the realm, having power over the man souls residing within. He’d been handed his very first defeat by Tokei himself, and so the monster had taken vows of revenge toward him. The numerous encounters left Tokei with bruises and scar tissue, strengthening his skin a bit. On a “normal” day, Tokei was nursing one of his more recent wounds and found an envelope containing a letter. He was shocked. Not only was the message in Arcanian, but it also contained a date. Today was his birthday. After a congratulatory pat on the back, he continued floating on, searching for a way out. By sheer birthday luck, he noticed another portal and gratefully entered.
III. Stranger in a Strange Land
As he exited the realm between realms, he was startled. Tokei had landed, at night, in a bustling city, with lights blaring and vehicles zipping round in the air. From the hill he’d landed on, he looked over the city in awe. Lights, sounds, people, buildings, houses, cars, everything. It was too much. Tokei didn’t know what to make of it. Startled, he retreated over the hill, where an even worse surprise awaited him. By some bitter twist of fate, he’d arrived in the Arcanian’s former homeland, now the abandoned harbor of Junon. He ran down the hill, crying. His mixed emotions had finally exploded: confusion towards the exceedingly large city, happiness on finally getting out of Limbo, sadness at seeing his homeland completely bastardized, loneliness on knowing that none of his people had survived. The internal maelstrom built up as he took refuge in the shell of a building. Very frustrated, he let out many great yells and screams, echoing many times in the stillness. Tokei cried himself to sleep. He awoke the next morning, being prodded by scientists. They ran tests on him, identified him, and through a DNA scan concluded that he was identical to a large feather found in the abandoned city. The problem was, the feather dated back to 2005, more than 2000 years ago. By analyzing history texts and old videos taken of important conflicts, they realized what was to be done.
IV. Finding Alliances
The Earth, by now run by a single government, needed two exceptionally skilled warriors to defend the planet from alien invasion. The resources the scientists had found led them to believe that Tokei Ws one of the two. Through extensive testing, they found the second, a young man named Reginald. The scientists gave Tokei an earpiece so that he could understand his new partner. The device converted all sounds into Arcanian. A similar earpiece was set in Reginald, translating all to English. After weeks and weeks of training, it was concluded that the duo would not be powerful enough to stop the imminent threat of galactic terrorism. Intervention was needed. The two were taken to labs, where they were operated on. As he awoke from the sedatives, Tokei discovered that he had two exceptional new skills: psionics and huge wings meant for flight. After a brief exchange, Tokei flew out the window, disgusted. The microchip implanted in his brain taught him instantly how to fly, and as a bonus removed the need for the earpiece. As he was passing over the building, he saw Reginald going through the same procedure. He too had wings, but instead of psionics, Reginald possessed powers of lightning. He joined Tokei outside the window and the outcasts headed back to Old Junon together. Both of them hid from government officials throughout the night. The next day, Reginald took Tokei to the city’s warpholes, essentially shortcuts that used dimensional portals to instantly travel between cites. By combining their powers, the two newfound friends escaped to Limbo.
V. Brave New World
The pair of Tokei and Reginald spent about a year and a half in Limbo, making sure that there was no way that the government could have followed them. It was here that the two made their good-byes. Reginald escaped into a modern-day world just barely advanced from the present. Tokei, however, found a land called RPGC, where he resided for years. He made a faithful friend in fighter Terry Bogard, future leader of the Rovers. As the Rovers formed, Terry welcomed him in and gave him a family in the clan. Along with the Rovers, Tokei also made a short-lived collaboration with Fabricated Industries. Even Reginald somehow found his way to RPGC and embarked with the New Age Champions, who sadly never got off the ground. After so many alliances, Tokei decided on going solo. Since then, he has not made much of an impact on the world. He briefly aided the Rovers in their struggle to regain co-leader Sihara after her death and rebirth. Part of this struggle included two short skirmishes with legendary icon Tipahurate. After that ordeal was over, he disappeared for months. Tokei reappeared in January, leading an attack on a massive terrorist organization, fighting by himself. The conflict grew to include many fighters and ultimately sparked both the destruction of the Empire State Building and the death of the President. Now he has taken to wandering aimlessly in the sky, occasionally fighting. Rumors of the return of the Rovers have sparked his interest lately…
